“The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the rain may enter; but the King of England may not enter; all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement.” If society has regressed to where power alone is sufficient for government action, we have a police state. If power alone is sufficient, our lives are in jeopardy if we pique a police officer.

Again from the radio today, was the phrase “necessary” security, and how now, with 9-11 so “far” in our past, we regard “necessary” security measures as an extreme inconvenience. The question is, what exactly IS necessary security?
Incontrovertible vs Overwhemling
I was listening to a recording of the vice president talking about the “overwhelming” evidence of links between Saddam Hussein and Al-queda. I was reminded of the Cuban missile crisis and the phrase “incontrovertible” evidence of soviet missiles in Cuba.
