An interesting article. This guy takes a stock WinXP system and goes to ONE web site (using Internet Explorer, of course) – and gets 16 unwanted, unauthorized programs installed on his computer.

Amtrak “Security”
Stupid, stupid, stupid… “Amtrak conductors have begun random checks of passengers’ IDs as a precaution against terrorist attacks. This works because, somehow, terrorists don’t have IDs. I’ve written about this kind of thing before. It’s the kind of program that makes us no safer, and wastes everyone’s time and Amtrak’s money.”
Profile: ‘hinky’
“The problem with computerized passenger profiling is that it simply doesn’t work. Terrorists don’t fit a profile and cannot be plucked out of crowds by computers.”
Amusing OS Mascots
An amusing thing I’ve stumbled across recently is the concept of “OS-tan”, which is basically unofficial OS “mascot” characters.
How It Works…The Computer
Scans of a book from 1971… yes, you read that right. Re-published in 1979 (just after I was born, how nice!). Both editions are included. Even if you just poke though the scans, it’s very amusing. I especially like all the pictures of punch cards… and the “micro” computer that is bigger than my entertainment center.
