It’s (almost) a new year, and during Black Friday I saw an ad for key caps and it’s been a little while since I last changed out my key caps, and the price was good, so I decided to get myself a new set, just to change things up. (Also, it was a good excuse to pull all the caps off and give my keyboard a bit of a deep-clean.)
This time I went with a set of key caps from Keychron, the maker of my keyboard, rather than a 3rd party set. Although I liked the keys I had before, I missed having my keyboard-specific alternate-function labels on some of the keys.
The set I went with is a Double Shot PBT OSA Full set (I didn’t need the full set, they didn’t have a tenkeyless specific set) in gray, with orange accent keys. (Sadly, the retro color scheme was out of stock.)
These caps are slightly rounded, giving them a bit of a retro feel – which I was kind of leaning towards anyway.
The caps are double-shot, which I like because the labels won’t wear away (a problem I’ve had with other keyboards in the past), though it does mean the backlight doesn’t come through the labels – but that’s something I can live with.
It still looks cool with the backlight on, though, and the typing feel is good – I’m still able to type at my usual speed. The key sound is also pretty much the same as before – I don’t notice much of a difference, but that’s OK because I was happy with how my keyboard sounded.
All in all I’m quite happy with my new set of key caps. It’ll probably take me a few days to pick a new backlight color (I’m not sure what will go best yet), but that’s part of the fun. Maybe swapping out my key caps will become a new yearly tradition? We’ll see…
