Nature-Deficit Disorder

Families and Technology: Do your kids have Nature-Deficit Disorder?

An interesting point. I wonder if it’s true. Of course, it’s hard for me to say. (I spent a LOT of time outside as a kid.)

Though, now that I mention it, I had wondered over the past few years why I see so few children playing outside in people’s yards – since that’s where I usually was in my youth. I wonder if the reason is that they are inside on the computer or in front of the TV?

Hmmm….

  1. That, or being shepherded around to endless soccer practices, ballet rehearsals, piano lessons, tutoring sessions….. you get the picture. The pace of life has changed, and the GameCubes aren’t to blame.

  2. No, I don’t think GameCubes are to blame either – I think parent’s are.

There is so much pressure on kids now-a-days to be involved in as much as possible & succeed at it all that we shuttle them around to soccer practices, ballet rehearsals, piano lessons, etc.

Parents pressure their children way too much, school standards are higher, and kids don’t have the chance to be kids anymore!

Parent’s should chill-out & lay-off a little and let their children have a “day off” away from the lessons, the games, the practices, and the tutoring… Let them eat ice cream all day, climb trees, and run around bare-foot outside. That’s what kids are supposed to do – have fun!
