I think dad’s gone completely bonkers. Today he came over and gave Betsy and I a treat (a single dried cranberry each) for making a huge mess!
We were chewing up this paper that mom had left in our corner of the house, and dad came over, gave us the cranberry, and told us we were being very good. Didn’t he see how we’d shredded the paper and spread it all over the place?
I think he’s lost his mind… but as long as he keeps giving me treats, I guess I don’t mind (although it does take some of the fun out of things).

Phone book paper? That’s especially tasty.
Gus,
I don’t think your dad is sooo bonkers, really… mum also used to say to me I was a good boy when I was shredding my cardboard box. It is true that we make a huge mess, however humans know that as long as we shred cardboard we are not chewing their furniture or fabrics, and this is a plus for them! Mind you, I don’t fancy chewing curtains or sofa covers anyway…do you?
I’ve found that Moms and Dads have different tolerances for mess. Dad will allow me to make a LOT more mess before he cleans it up than Mom will! Maybe you haven’t reached the paper shredding limit yet…It may be time to shred, shred, and shred some more!

Uh Gus ….. come ON! You KNOW that mind left some time ago!
I think Hugo is on to something. I heard dad say something about “positive reinforcement.” Hmmm…
Actually, Hugo, I don’t chew curtains or sofas, but Betsy likes to indulge herself in such luxuries from time to time.
